suite of specimens we acquired a few months ago from the Allan Young collection.  Allan is a friend of mine and is well known in the mineral world.  He is a world class thumbnail mineral collector, a past President of the Friends of Mineralogy group, and has been a recurring contributor to the Mineralogical Record

a renown collector.
This is a fine rare piece from the old locality of the Balcoll Mine, a historic silver mine located near Falset, Priorat, Terragona, Catalonia, Spain composed of acanthite crystals to 6 mm in size growing on and through a white calcite matrix with a little chalcopyrite and pyrite along for the ride. This piece came to Al through Jordi Fabre of Fabre Minerals who is located in Barcelona, Spain and specialized in Spanish minerals.  Jordi's original label states the piece was earlier in the collection of J. Povill, and according to Al's noted he purchased the piece from Jordi Fabre in 2019 for 3, so that provides some background on value and rarity for us.
Upon doing my usual research on this piece I discovered that Jordi had photographed the piece and you can see his photo (
Photo ID: 961142) on the Mindat website for the Balcoll mine.  It is one of just nine photos of acanthite from this mine, which basically tells us this is a rare locality piece and darned hard to find on the market today, or at any time in history really.
The specimen 2.9 x 2.4 x 1.8 cm in size (thumbnail sized), it weighs 13.6 grams, and it comes professionally labeled and ready for immediate display with our label, 2 earlier Fabre Minerals labels as well as Al's handwritten note stated when he got the piece, from whom, and his cost at the time.
Jordi's description for this piece on the Mindat website states the following:
"
Group of cubo-octahedral Acanthite crystals with very well defined faces and edges and on a Calcite matrix. Well crystallized and well-shaped Acanthite crystals are a rarity at the Balcoll mine, better known for its magnificent samples of native Silver.
Balcoll Mine, Falset, Comarca Priorat, Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain, Calcite fluorescent under shortwave UV."
And yep, parts of the piece fluoresce a nice orange under shortwave UV light.
