ake a gander at this stained rock. Waving from one side is a sizable leaf of high-purity, crystalline gold. A guy has to wonder what would possess the old timers to crush such natural, unspoiled beauty, but in gold rush times, they usually did. Mines producing specimen rock like this would have considered it just higher-grade ore than usual and pulverized it in their stamp mills. Back then, there was probably no such thing as 'specimen value'. Everything had to be milled and melted down. Buyers interested in the gold content only then could assay it, weigh it up, and know exactly how much gold you were trying to sell them. Finding collectors of unique gold specimens on the internet wasn't an option band then.. You got to admit, the combination of natural, unspoiled raw gold and quartz makes for quite an eye-full. My source didn't say exactly where it came from.
I don't sell low grade gold ores. I sell authentic, naturally-occurring specimens with visible gold. These high-grade beauties are hard to find and expensive to obtain. My prices aren't based upon the amount of gold contained, but upon the authenticity, rarity and collectability of these unique rocks.

I poured through old mining dumps for years looking at orange-yellow-rusty rock through a loupe, but I never found a piece with visible gold.
Hydrothermal solutions carrying gold and silica crystallized into veins of gold quartz. This specimen comes from one of the many gold-bearing vein systems filling the State of California.

STORIES FROM THE GOLDFIELDS
A
ttempts to find gold often wind up with little to show - nothing but dog-tired and the appetite of a horse. Prospecting could be the perfect calling for insomniacs. After a day of swinging a pickaxe, once you hits the sack, sleep quickly follows. If you didn't know before you went mining, you're about to learn what it's really like to work.
The fact is, a guy can't always load up his ATV or jeep, cruise down to a honey hole, and dig an ounce or two. To some, prospecting
for gold sounds romantic. In some ways, I suppose it is. But don't kid yourself.
Everybody who's tried it came to realize it's not easy. Many come to the conclusion that maybe it's not their bowl of baklava. Just for an example, hike into the mountains equipped with a gold pan, crevicing tools, rock hammer, pickaxe, shovel, and other necessary supplies. Spend the entire day hiking two miles up a creek or riverbed sniping for gold. When evening comes, tell me your first impressions of what prospecting for gold is like.
Throughout history, gullible folks thought gold simply laid around some lazy creek bank waiting for them to show up. During gold rushes, prior to joining, people from the four corners of the earth read all the bull pitching big bonanzas and bought it hook, line, and sinker. All those poor farmers, shop-keeps, and immigrants could think about was how rich they were before a pickaxe ever struck the ground. I imagine, to a man, they all expected to hit it big. In truth, very few did.
Moving ahead, to the adventurous type living in today’s stressful world, there's more to prospecting than meets the eye. There's tranquility; clean air; independence; self-sufficiency. If you're the type who likes being his own boss and this notion of self-determination, mining might be right up your alley. Could be, you'll begin to develop a whole new appreciation for nature and the therapeutic value of hard work. These are known to transcend the almighty buck. Whether alone in the north woods or some desolate desert, experiences await like none you've ever known.
Having been a digger for eighteen years, there's no way to count how many times I've been skunked, disappointed, ready to throw in the towel.
Most people who leave some other job to chase gold quickly learn 'there's no easy ounces.' But while you may not hit it rich, there truly are better things in life than making money
. Surrounded by
nature, chasing an elusive dream, one imposes their will on life. Who knows? Gold mining may pan out for you. The prospector's lifestyle fit me like a glove. There's no feeling in the world quite like the one you get finding gold in some remote
place where no one else thought to look.    credit - G. Ralph
